Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has invited Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to attend the 18th BRICS Summit as a special guest, which is scheduled to be held in New Delhi, the capital of India.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaid Islam confirmed this information on Thursday (July 23).

She stated that the invitation letter sent by India has arrived at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and has been forwarded to the Prime Minister’s Office.

The 18th BRICS Summit will be held in New Delhi on September 12 and 13. As the host country for this 11-member bloc’s summit, India may invite several non-member countries as special guests. Following this tradition, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh has been invited.

Meanwhile, in response to a journalist’s question regarding whether Bangladesh has any concerns about the ongoing student movement in India, Shama Obaid Islam said that Bangladesh, as a democratic state, desires peace and stability in the region.

She added, “We hope that India, as the world’s largest democratic state, will consider the situation of its people and move towards a swift resolution of the problems.”
